Upgraded to Wordpress 2.3.1 and got the dreaded invalid response from xmlrpc error

Putting this

in my .htaccess did not help but taking Joe’s hint to disable plugin, I disabled my Google Sitemaps 2.7.1 plugin and managed to post with Windows Live Writer successfully.
Then I upgraded my Google Sitemaps plugin to version 3.0.2.1.

fixes xmlrpc.php Server not found error, not the invalid response from xmlrpc error.
